25 vision board goals, each with a number under the picture

· 6 min read

Honeycomb of tiles filling in one by one, like a dream board where every goal has a count

A vision board works better when each picture has a number under it and a first step beside it. In experiments, picturing a perfect future on its own left people with less energy. Here are 25 vision board goals ideas by category, from 100 km walked to 12 letters written, each one easy to count.

Contents

Vision board goals for health and fitness

A health picture is quick to pin and quick to forget, so give it a count you can log this week.

  • Pin a photo of a trail and walk 100 km by the end of June.
  • Put a pair of running shoes on the board and run 3 times a week for 12 weeks.
  • Cut out a yoga mat and go to 40 yoga or stretching classes this year.

  • Pin a bowl of soup and cook dinner at home 4 nights a week for 3 months.

Vision board goals for money and home

Money goals are amounts and dates, and this page gives no financial advice: it only shows how to write the number. A tidy room can be a count too, as a declutter challenge shows.

  • Pin a photo of a key and put money toward a home deposit every month for 24 months.
  • Put your dream trip on the board and set aside the same amount every payday until it is paid for.
  • Cut out a piggy bank and have one no-spend weekend a month for 6 months.
  • Pin a plant and keep 5 house plants alive for a full year.
  • Stick a picture of a tidy room on the board and clear one drawer or shelf a week for 20 weeks.

Vision board goals for students and for your career

School and work pictures turn into hours, classes and applications you can count, and that is what makes them goals.

  • Pin a photo of a desk and study 30 minutes a day on 100 school days.
  • Put a diploma on the board and pass every class this year.
  • Cut out a stage and give 3 talks in front of a group this year.
  • Write the job you want under its picture and apply to 20 jobs like it in 3 months.
  • Pin the logo of an online course and finish it in 8 weeks, one module a week.

What is a good vision board goal?

A good vision board goal is a picture with a number under it. The picture alone is not enough. In four experiments, Kappes and Oettingen asked people to picture an ideal future. Afterwards they had less energy than people who pictured the same future with doubts, with things going wrong, or in a plain way. In one study, students who pictured a perfect week said a week later that they had got less done. We found nothing that shows a picture on a wall makes a goal happen by itself.

What helps is to picture the wish, then the thing in the way, then a plan. A method called WOOP puts it in four steps: Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. The plan is an if-then line: "If I am tired after work, then I walk for 10 minutes first." A 2021 review of 21 studies and 15,907 people found that this pairing helped people reach their goals, with a small to medium effect. Its authors say the true effect may be smaller. If-then plans on their own had a medium to large effect, across 94 tests.

Then make the number specific. A review of 35 years of goal research found that specific, hard goals lead to higher performance than being told to do your best. "Get fit" is a wish. "100 km by June" is a goal. Under the number, write the first step for this week: book the class, buy the stamps. If you make your board in January, what the research says about New Year's resolutions applies to it too.

How to track vision board goals

Give every picture a place to log. A review of 138 studies found that people who monitored their progress reached their goals more often, and that recording it beat keeping it in your head.

Kilometres, pages and letters are amounts that add up toward a total. Days you did the thing, like 100 days of guitar, are a day count. One board can hold both. A big list works the same way: things to do before 30 is one goal with 30 parts.

A board shows where you want to go, not how far you have come. A picture that fills with every kilometre, page or letter shows the second part.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a vision board?
Pick 4 to 6 areas, such as health, money, work or school, people and fun. Add one picture for each, and write a number and a date under it: 100 km by June, 12 letters this year, 500 words of a new language by December.
What are good vision board goals for students?
Study 30 minutes a day on 100 school days, pass every class this year, give 3 talks in front of a group, and finish an online course in 8 weeks. Each one has a number or a clear done.
Do vision boards really work?
We found no study that shows a picture makes a goal happen by itself. In experiments, picturing a perfect future left people with less energy. Picturing the wish, then the obstacle, then making an if-then plan helped in a review of 21 studies. So put a number and a first step under every picture.
